In simple words u have these differences:
Self made VS asking others to it Less expensive VS Dam expensive
Basically Tour packagers do things that you either dont want to do or not able to do. Some ppl r bit scared to explore places with obvious reasons n want others to arrange everything for them. I dont say its a bad thing to do but since u asked the difference toh i told u about it.

Plenty of differences between own plans and tour operators.
Both have pros and cons. If you are planning a tour for the first time where many locations/attractions involved, better choose a tour operator.
For instance, Dubai has several attractions. One cannot cover everything even with 3-4 days stay. You will require thorough work out. But you must be staying few more days extra to cover. Hotels, local transportation ….. bills will fly. The same applicable for Singapore and Malaysia.
Malaysia will be bit tougher, if you want to visit Batu caves where famous Murugan temple is located, you will need one full day and couple of Islands, where you will have to stay longer if you plan on your own. But tour operators, time bound events, maximum events in minimum duration.
In nutshell… With Tour Operators, your mobile storage will be full. Your own plans…memories and experiences will make you feel fullest.

IF YOU ARE NOT PRE-PLANNED THE ROUTE , HOTELS , LOCATIONS ETC, IT WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT TO MANAGE THE TIME AND MONEY. BUT A TRAVEL AGENCY HAS ALREADY A ROUTEMAP, EXPERIENCED DRIVER AND OTHER FACILITIES, YOU CAN COMPLETE THE TOUR EFFORTLESS. THE DISADVANTAGES ARE LITTLE BIT HIGH COST, THEIR OWN CHOICES OF LOCATIONS, THE HOTELS, SHOPPING AREA ETC.

If you are exploring India, then no need of any tour operator, but abroad yes a tour operator will give a well-designed plan to cover maximum in minimum time.
