Celebrating Children

Children are the most innocent, loveable and pure beings, who brighten our day to day life with their charm and exuberance.

We celebrate these little people to make them feel special and valued. The world celebrates children day on the 20th of November but we Indians started to celebrate it on the 14th of November since 1964. You must be wondering what the reason behind this shift was.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was an anti-colonial nationalist, secular humanist, social democrat and the first prime minister of India serving from right after independence until his death 16 years later.

Pandit Jawaharlal had immense love for children and was very affectionate towards them. He once said, “children are like buds in the garden and should be nurtured with care and love, as they are the future of the nation and the citizens of tomorrow”. Children called him chacha (uncle) and loved him very much.

So, after he passed away in 1964, Indians began to recognize his birthday, 14th of November as children’s day in order to honor him.

On this day sweets and gifts are distributed among children and parties and games are organized in various institutions to bring joy among them. Programs are held to promote child welfare. Children wait for the day with lots of excitement and celebrate the day with the memories of their beloved Chacha Nehru!
