Significance of Ramadan

Ramadan has often been considered a gift to the humans by Allah (SWT). So what is so special about Ramadan that fills every person with inquisitiveness. The most astounding feature about Ramadan is that it provides each one of us with a challenge.

Let's begin with the benefits of fasting. There is some evidence that strict fasting may reduce the chances of chronic diseases like heart attack and cancer although many people argue that this method of fasting dehydrates our body. However, if one studies Islam he/she would know that Islam encourages to drink large quantities of water during the suhoor (Meal before the beginning of fast) and futoor (Meal that breaks the fast). This is done to make sure that a muslim is not deprived of water. Fasting also enhances a person's will power and refreshes the mind. Fasting also helps in balancing weight levels. Other than fasting, Ramadan is a wonderful opportunity for a muslim to get closer in relationship with his creator. The prophet PBUH said- When Ramadan comes, the gates of paradise are opened and the gates of hell are closed and the devils are chained.

•Sahih Bukhari
So why do people sin during Ramadan? This is because when the devil whispers into our ears our inner being (nafs) gets taught all those evil things. For example when you go to school and learn things you are most likely to carry on your life in accordance of the knowledge and experience you have attained. So even when the devils are chained our nafs is polluted and hence, prevent us from getting closer to Allah. But the good thing is that you don't have to fight the devil. You just have to bring the nafs on the right path. We must begin to acknowledge the blessing of Ramadan from this very day.

May Allah make the Ramadan of 1445 Hijri the best Ramadan so far and help us pollute the filth in our nafs. Ameen ! And all praise belong to the lord of the multiverse.
