Sunday, March 19, 2023

The holy month of Ramadan is the 9th month in the Islamic lunar calendar. It is a month of fasting, worship, service, communal gathering, and spiritual development. Ramadan Is an important time for Muslims around the world. the annual observance of Ramadan is regarded as one of the five pillars of Islam. It is from the phases of the moon that we determine the beginning and the ending of Ramadan.

Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, self-improvement, and heightened devotion and worship. Muslims are expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam. Muslims believe that Ramadan teaches them to practice self-discipline, self-control,sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate, thus encouraging actions of generosity and compulsory charity (zakat).

A daily life routine of a Muslim during this month involves Suhoor: the early meal, Siyama: the fast, iftar: breaking the fast, Taraweeh : prayer and Zakat: charity

SAHOOR: The early meal

Before dawn, Muslims awaken to pray and partake in suhoor together in preparation for the day of fasting. Restaurants across the city offer suhoor meals.

SIYAM: The fast

Siyam is the hours of fasting. During Ramadan, Muslims are not supposed to eat, drink and smoke between sunrise and sunset. Non -Muslims avoid eating and drinking to pay respect to them. The fast (sawm) begins at dawn and ends at sunset. In addition to abstaining from eating and drinking during this time, Muslims abstain from sexual relations and sinful speech and behaviour during Ramadan fasting or month. The act of fasting is said to redirect the heart away from worldly activities, its purpose being to cleanse the soul by freeing it from harmful impurities. Muslims also believe fasting helps in still compassion for the food-insecure poor.

IFTAR: Breaking the fast

As the sun sets, as adhaan (the Islamic call for prayer) is proclaimed signalling the end of fasting. People across the world traditionally break their fast like Prophet Muhammad did, with a sip of water and some dates.

TARAWEEH: Prayers

The isha and taraweeh are very important for Muslims. According to Islamic tradition, the month of Ramadan is when Allah revealed the first verses of the Qur’ran to the Prophet Muhammad.
