Salmiya is the worst city in the world for expats, reveals InterNations survey

The latest Expat Insider report by InterNations ranked Salmiya as the worst city in the world for expats, with a rank of 66 / 66 followed by Rome, which came in 65th, and Seoul, which ranked 64th.

Spain's third-largest city Valencia has been named the best destination for expatriates to live in, in a new ranking by InterNations.

The Expat City Ranking 2020, done after an extensive survey, has ranked three other Spanish cities in the top ten - Alicante (2nd), Málaga (6th) and the capital Madrid (9th).

Ranking 8th, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) has made it in the top ten for a fourth successive year while Abu Dhabi, taking the 10th spot, is the best-rated Middle Eastern destination this year, according to the ranking.

The Expat City Ranking is based on the annual Expat Insider survey by InterNations, considered the largest global community with some four million members in 420 cities around the globe. And with such a diverse membership, InterNations is seen as a valuable source of information for people who live and work abroad.

According to InterNations report, Salmiya does not only rank last in the Expat City Ranking in general, but it is also the worst-rated city in the Getting Settled Index (66th out of 66). Indeed, the Kuwaiti city places last or second to last in three out of four subcategories in this index, with only the Local Language subcategory getting a better — but still below-average — result (40th). The majority of respondents doesn’t feel at home in Salmiya (54% vs. 21% globally), finds it hard to make new friends (59% vs. 33% globally), and disagrees that it is easy to get used to the local culture (52% vs. 21% globally).

Hope still some people are comparing Salmiya and Abbasiya. I was there in Salmiya 4 years but I just felt desperate to adjust with there. After that i shifted to Abbassiya. Price for each items are compared to Abbassiy are high there in Salmiya. Some friends from Salmiya searching in Abasiya for some special items from India and for vehicle repairing etc. Some are sending kids to schools also, like Bhavens. If we comeout around 50-60 people we know each other in Jleeb.
Just like we are staying in Kerala, feel. Dear Salmiya friends don''t compare Abbasiya with Salmiya, here Kerala familites are located for their kids schooling and escpecially good area for Nurses for their transportation to almost all parts of Kuwait. Here we are expecting not that much like you are in Salmiya, but we are one and feels good to be here. Take a break and find some other place now onwards for to blame and put your complexes. Jai Abbasiya....

I am sure the journalist who reported that article has no idea about Salmiya and has not explained any facts to the statement. First of all Salmiya is not a city and its a part of a Governorate. Salmiya has very nice beaches and a beautiful Gulf road (corniche) with nice buildings, hotels, malls, attractions and restaurants. There are nice public gardens and entertainment centers for kids and adults. Most of the citizens and expatriates flock to Salmiya to enjoy a dinner, shopping, stroll on the malls. parks or beaches and entertainment centers or attractions. Its a much a cleaner place than several other spots in Kuwait and is considered a medium to high end place to live. I have been living in Salmiya over 35 years and love it.

Mallus are confident that KPTC is Kerala public transport Company. Where ever Mallus infilter in Major no''s, Other Nationality people start to think that All Indians are Like Mallus (intolerable). It''s a fact that No Indians like Mallus. Mostly All Mallus consider themselves as Malyalees not Indians.
Salmiya Citizen''s should be more cautious when mallus start entering. it will turn to mini Kerala in No Time.

It is a global comparison- obviously Salmiya may not be the best for expats in terms of feeling accepted when compared to places AROUND the globe. The basis of comparison is flawed, but it is no surprise that Kuwait (although better than Saudi) can be a little intimidating to foreign nationals.
