Movies are a means of not only entertainment but also a means to inspire and instill hope in all of us. We watch movies which have a good actors, a story that holds audience, good songs and a pinch of awesome action. With a lot of movies releasing, especially movies related to the comic world, one which has especially got my attention and appreciation is the latest movie reboot of Superman, “Man of Steel” directed by Zach Snyder and produced by the famous Christopher Nolan. And truly the movie lives up to the expectations placed on the legendary director and producer. If I can describe Man of Steel in a few words, I would say, “The best superman movie ever”.
Let me give a brief idea about who Superman is. The man of Steel, the last son of Krypton, or popularly known as the man of steel is one of the most powerful and the most famous hero in the comic verse. Ranked in IGN as the number one hero, he is a hero that instills hope in humanity and has saved the earth in DC universe countless number of times. Along with Batman and wonder woman, they are the trinity of the DC universe. He was send from Krypton, his home planet, when their planet got destroyed. Due to the yellow sun on earth, he got superhuman powers and is almost invincible. His weaknesses involve the element kryptonite, the red sun and mystical powers. He has underwent a lot of changes in the past few years and with the advent of the new 52 age in the DC universe he has changed his costume and has his origin story rebooted, which is the story used in the Man of Steel movie.
Now back to the movie. The movie goes through the same origin story of Superman as the previous movie, but it explains even the minor details of Superman. For a normal movie goer, it may feel weird that Superman has changed his dress or that the ‘S’ in his sign doesn’t stand for Superman, but that is the new story in the DC universe and in my opinion it looks better and establishes on a much greater scale that he is a kryptonian and not a human being. This movie, unlike the previous iterations, doesn’t dwell on the past of Superman rather tells us the decisions he took and what influenced those decisions in him.
The direction, the action scenes and the background scores are mind blowing and well-orchestrated. This is one of the main reasons of the film’s success. Despite a poor critics review, the film went on to become a huge hit. The reason? Well the simple reason is that people liked the change that they brought about in the Man of Steel. The dialogues are strong and the cast well selected. One dialogue that caught my attention (along with the many others) is when the child Superman is adjusting to his powers. When everything goes out of control and he HIDEs himself, his mother comes and he tells her “Mom, the world is too big for me”. His mom replies, “Then make it small dear”.
There are some flaws in the movie nevertheless. One thing is the ending that seems to break one of the fundamental oaths of Superman. Another thing is the huge amount of destruction that has taken place in Metropolis is also a little too much. But it looks impressive. It is true that unlike the iron man series, there is far too less humor in the movie. But the ideals for which Superman stands for is nothing to humor about. Other than these insignificant flaws, the movie is good. It has the Nolan magic, making it different like the Batman trilogy. For success is not in doing different things, but doing things differently.
Overall, this movie is a must watch. The 3D format is not much of a use since the movie was not shot in 3D rather converted to that format. But for the music, action scenes and the excellent dialogue delivery, the movie should be watched in a theater. Here emerges the Man of Steel, Superman, flying off to a grand success, ruling people’s hearts and the box office.
