Happy Teachers Day

Happy Teachers Day

On this special day for teachers, I would like to share some words about this day and my favourite teacher.

Teacher’s day, the birthday of former president Shri Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan which is celebrated on September 5 to mark respect and honour to teachers all over India. As former American president Barack Obama said “If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There is always a great teacher somewhere in your life.” He said that you can’t succeed in life without the basic knowledge of the universe which is given by teachers. This shows that teachers as the starters of our lives who fill creativity in our minds. So teaching is a great profession.

When Shri Radhakrishnan became the President of India, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, on 5 September. He replied, “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers' Day.” His birthday has since been celebrated as Teacher's Day in India

In April 1909, Shri Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was appointed to the Department of Philosophy at the Madras Presidency College. Thereafter, in 1918, he was selected as Professor of Philosophy by the University of Mysore, where he taught at its Maharaja's College, Mysore. In 1921, he was appointed as a Professor of Philosophy to occupy the King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science at the University of Calcutta. He represented the University of Calcutta at the Congress of the Universities in the British Empire in June 1926 & the International Congress of Philosophy at Harvard University in September 1926.

My first teacher was Mrs. Jecintha Pinto. She was and is my favourite teacher ever. I met her at the age of three when my parents left me and my brother with her to teach us the basics and take care of us during daytime. She only taught me the basics of the language and put a strong base for my studies. Even before my parents, she found that I have a flare of music. She used to call me ‘One Page Boy’ because I was lazy to write more than that. She left for India for good and still we miss her a lot because of her loving and caring ways of teaching.

Teachers are no less than engineers and architects of our country. By the way teachers are more important because they have made the architects and engineers by teaching them. Teachers are the important people who shape the young mind. They have kindness to thousands of kids who come to them to get knowledge from them about the world.

They show us what is right and wrong. They teach us that all are equal irrespective of caste, religion, financial status etc. They should be bowed as they spend daily:

•An average of five hours on instruction (in class and providing tutoring or extra academic support)

•Approximately 36 minutes on student supervision and discipline

•45 minutes planning, preparing or collaborating with colleagues

•36 minutes grading, documenting and analysing student work

•Almost 15 minutes communicating parents via email, phone or face to face meetings

It would be wrong to say that teachers are equal to parents. Teacher teach us selflessly and take us as her/his own child, Parents give birth to children but teacher shape the personality of the child and try to make them a good human being. They give children the hope to dream. They guide and support students in achieving goals. Therefore, we have to thank the teachers a lot who will surely shape the future for us to live. I thank all the teachers who are the lights of my life.
