Handloom Week launched in Kuwait

Indian Ambassador Shri Sibi George today launched “Indian Handloom Week” in Kuwait.

The economic and commercial relationship between the two countries is growing despite the challenges posed by Covid 19 pandemic and there exists huge potential for its expansion, Ambassador said.

The event is part of our efforts to enhance our economic engagement with Kuwait, at the same time celebrating handloom industry in India which demonstrates the richness and diversity of Indian culture, Ambassador said. “Handloom in India is not just a piece of cloth. It actually enshrines a piece of our civilization,” he said.

The handloom industry in India has a long tradition of excellent craftsmanship, representing and preserving the vibrant Indian culture, he said.

Ambassador also recalled his visit to the Al Sadu House museum in Kuwait where he was delighted to see the strong connect between India and Kuwait in textiles industry particularly in the handloom sector.

During the event, members of the Embassy of India and their family members joined for a “Handloom Walk” on the stage to display the richness of Indian Handloom dress. Handmade Sarees from different parts of India were showcased by the Embassy staff during the colorful “Handloom Walk”.

Indian Embassy in Kuwait will be celebrating this week as Handloom Week in Kuwait from August 7th to August 15th. Ambassador invited all Indian nationals to take their photo wearing any handloom dress and upload it on social media with the hashtag #MyHandloomMyPride and #IndianHandloomWeekinKuwait during this week.

“The endeavor is to celebrate together this rich heritage and make sure that our new generation knows about this and as much enthusiasm as we show in buying branded clothes from the big metropolis of the western world,” Ambassador said.

In 2015, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi declared August 7 as National Handloom Day. On this day, India honours the handloom weaving community for their immense contribution to the socio-economic development of the country. The day also marks India's reaffirmation of protecting its glorious handloom heritage and empowering weavers and workers with greater opportunities to ensure livelihoods.

@Shabbir. We need to be modern and move ahead and not stick to outdated traditions that are meaningless. Whats the big deal in lighting lamps? You can light LED instead. If you have such mentality then why not use handwritten passports instead of printed passports. Why use online transactions when you can go to the bank, stand in queue etc. I know very well the traditions and which are not relevant today should be modified rather than continuing outdated methods.

You had commented as True Indian, but you dont know the Value of tradition and customs of India. As Indian, We are lighting Lamp at all our Inauguration functions.
India is a Land of traditions & customs which we were following from thousands of years.

You should feel proud that in this modern era also we are still following rituals of our Country.

Its ironical that in this modern age of technology, they light this old outdated way of lighting lamp. Comeon use LED lights instead. Change is vital. It looks so funny. We think of our country as modern and in 21st century yet follow these old outdated practices.
