Minimally invasive coronary surgery techniques (MICS) are getting popular in India and it will benefits the patients in many ways, well known Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon and Director of Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals Kolkata, Dr. Sushan Mukhopadhyay said.

Dr. Sushan Mukhopadhyay was in Kuwait to conduct a symposium on New Horizons in Cardiac Surgery organized by Indian Doctors Forum (IDF) and Kuwait medical Association (KMA).

Coronary surgery are conventionally performed by splitting or cutting through the breastbone. With the advancement of MICS technique, the way coronary surgery are performed is revolutionized. “There is no bone cutting in the center of the chest, the incision size is small, the pain is less, the blood loss is less and the patient can get back to work very soon.” Dr Sushan told in an exclusive chat on the sideline of the symposium.

“We have been doing MICS coronary artery bypass grafting since last 6-7 years and have done more than 1500 such surgeries”, Dr Sushan said. Initially there were few of us doing this, but today this technique is very well adapted in many parts of India. Any kind of surgery in an adult such as Removal of blockage, valve operations, removal of cardiac tumors etc can be done through this technique. There is a need for developing this technology in this part of the world too, Dr Sushan said.

The problem of genetics in India place a major role in the increasing number of cardiac issues in the Indian community, he said while asking about the increasing heart attacks happening among the Indian expatriates in Kuwait. “We have certain kind of diseases which get along with our lifestyle. Every race have some genetically imprint diseases. We too are genetically imprint with certain diseases. Propensity of diabetics and the incident of coronary blockage are very high in Indian subsets. We need to be little cautious especially if we have a family history of some coronary disease”, Doctor said. General checkup doesn’t mean anything. It can give you an idea about your general health. It is always advisable to look at your family tendencies like what kind of disease run in your family etc to have certain specific preventive checkup done. If you have a propensity of diabetic running in your family, you need to test the possibility of effecting that in your health. Probably a CT Scan check on calcium deposit on your coronary will give you an indication on where you are heading to, if you have a family history of cardiac issues.

Whether you underwent any heart issues or you are having a family history, the precautions remains the same. You have to maintain certain lifestyle pattern. You should not do certain bad things like smoking, should not gain weight, keep your sugar under control, remain stress free as possible, continue with your regular exercise etc. Exercise doesn’t need any fancy things like joining gym or health club etc… a simple regular walking is enough to keep yourself fit.

You should consult a doctor and take a professional advice if you notice any deviation you notice in your health from your normal self. We usually see people take their own decision, which is not at all good, Doctor Sushan said. “Know your own health. Try to understand the signals coming from your own body. Pick them up earlier and get yourself screened accordingly”, Doctor concluded.
