Bharata Bhagya Bidhata

Bharata Bhagya Bidhata

‘Bharata Bhagya Bidhata’ is a 5-stanza hymn in Bengali. This was scored and composed by Rabindranath Tagore in the year of 1911. The first stanza was selected as the official national anthem of India on 24 January 1950. Here’s the English translation of the anthem below.

Oh! the ruler of the minds of people, victory be to You, dispenser of the destiny of India!

Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat, Maratha, Dravida, Orissa and Bengal,

The Vindhya, the Himalayas, the Yamuna and the Ganges, and the oceans with foaming waves all around.

Wake up listening to Your auspicious name, ask for Your auspicious blessings,

And sing to Your glorious victory.

Oh! You who impart well-being to the people, victory be to You, dispenser of the destiny of India!

Jaya hey, Jaya Hey, Jaya hey

Victory over to you.

This was first sung on the 2nd Annual Session of the INC ON 27th December 1911 by Tagore’s niece with a group of students. Years later, it was sung again by the Indian Constituent Assembly as an unanimous version on the midnight before the D-day(14th August 1947). As we’re celebrating the 77th year of independence in our nation, let’s unfurl the flag of the tricolored flag, sing the national anthem and respect our freedom fighters.

Wishing you all Happy Independence Day.

JAI HIND!
