SDG 5 promotes gender equality. What does gender equality mean to you?

Long, long ago, in a huge village there lived a king who preached about male domination over all other genders because he thought men were the only ones that did all the work and women just sat at home looking after their families. Men in his kingdom were on the seventh cloud when they heard about it and thought of ways they could torment other ‘inferior’ genders. Women were treated like toys that had no value and were shut off whenever they tried to express their opinion. not just women but queers too were harassed and if found out by the king about this “weird queer-ness” of theirs, they were,….. yes you guessed it right, they were killed.

This torture continued for centuries and just when the ‘inferior’ genders thought they had chance to stand up for themselves, they only met disappointment and more harassment. Many brave people tried and died oppressing this monstrous system for their RIGHTS, for their FREEDOM, FOR THEIR LIFE!!....but to no avail.

Now a gazillion years later, women and queers have stood up for their rights, stronger than ever and have balled up the male dominating concept (and people for that matter) and tossed it over and beyond the horizon. They have proved to the whole world that they are not slaves to anyone and definitely not their toys of entertainment. Yes, it is indeed a proud moment for every single open minded and sane person out there (if you think it is not, what’s wrong with you? ITS 2022 FOR GOD’S SAKE!!).

Women and a few phenomenal men both started treating equality as a basic and fundamental right for people. They didn’t care if they had to sacrifice their life for it. They wanted everyone to be equal. And hence the term ‘feminism’ was born. Feminism in simple words was establishing the political, economic, personal, and social equality of the sexes. The idea of feminism seemed prominent to all women including me.

But as they say, even nectar is poison when taken to excess. This seemed to be coming true because, some ‘feminists’ were abusing this title that they’d gotten and had turned the aim of feminism from female equality to female supremacy. This is not what it was intended for. The concept of feminism was created to help the world be a better place where men and women had equal rights. Some feminists also said they cared about equality to shield themselves from any arguments that challenges their ideology and practices. Now this is what I don’t agree to in feminism. They’ve become feminists just because they had a personal stake there.

Recently, in an article, I read about a man getting brutally harassed by his wife for something he didn’t do and was threatened by her saying that if he told anyone about it, she would file an assault case against him. The man afraid of going to jail was forced to stay quiet and was left to suffer.

Does this sound familiar? Does it? Oh yeah right! This is the same concept of what happened to women those gazillion years ago. Remember? It’s the same ‘This gender dominates that gender’ crap all over again. (sorry for the word crap but this is the most decent word I could come up with for this situation). Is this how it is going to be for the rest of eternity? Just genders asserting dominance over each other? If it is, I hope the world comes to an end before everything starts getting messy.

Why can’t we just celebrate the thought of “gender equality” over female or male equality? The world would be such a marvellous and peaceful place to stay in.

Pink for girls, blue for boys; dolls for girls and guns for boys. Is this not a barrier to gender equality? Does a girl select pink for herself? No. does a guy choose blue for himself? NO!! This norm is forced on the children right from the beginning. Why do the fairy tales end on a happy note if the poor girl gets fortunate to marry a prince? Cinderella or Rapunzel are such fairy - tale characters who had to face life with great difficulties until a prince charming comes along and BOOM!! their life is all sorted. Why can we not inculcate equality instead of sexism.

It is still a long way to go to achieve exact equality of men and women. But I’m sure we can do it because we have come a long way from rubbing stones to turning a knob for fire. When no one thought we could do it, we did it. And that is all you need to make this world a better place.

Thank you .
