Diwali Celebrations By NRI’s

The NRI’s, have always been careful to never relinquish their affection, love and respect to their motherland, its cultures, its festivals, and always celebrated most festivals in the best way possible. They have welcomed each festival with a lot of joy and happiness, and one of the festivals celebrated by the NRI’s all over the world at its hike, is the festival of lights.

Festivals such as Diwali, brings a sense of being closer to India and its cultures, especially for the people of India, who have selflessly sacrificed the comfort of their homeland for a better job in the other part of the world. And thus, its observed that the expats celebrate not only Diwali, but every other festival with much pomp and grandeur, differently from the people of India, since NRI celebrations are likely to go on for almost for 2-3 months. It could also be because of the fact that the people living in India, seem to have various festivals, celebrations and events for almost every week, while the NRI’s find happiness in one festival or the other which are likely to go on for a long time.

With respect to the country in which I was born that is, Kuwait, Diwali celebrations are held at its best, while following the country’s rules and limitations. The apartment of every NRI, on the day of this colorful festival, is likely to be adorned with lanterns, rangoli’s and garlands, symbolizing their huge attachment towards India’s culture which brings a surge of positivity to anyone witnessing it. The participants of this festival can be seen dressed in dashing outfits, filled with heavy and beautiful embroidery works. Men appear wearing contemporary styled kurtas and dhotis, while women often wear silk, chiffon or velvet saris styling it in their own special ways.

Then comes the most delightful sight of them all, the tables filled with mouth savoring sweets rasmalai, gulab jamun, peda, burfi, and all-time favorites like kaju katli, halwa varieties of payasam and kheer. Its even more fun when people cook different dishes in different styles from their homes which allows the experience the dishes of each part of India.

Diwali, or the festival of lights, is a wonderful way through which Indians from different parts of the world, sharing their similarities, and celebrating their differences are united under the beautiful umbrella- ‘India’.

I would like to end this article by wishing that the gleaming fireworks burn away all our troubles, problems and sorrows, and the lanterns light up our life with happiness, joy, and peace on this wonderful Diwali.
