Meet Ms. Dalal Al Awadi: The Kuwaiti Woman Who Speaks Fluent Hindi and Loves Indian Culture

Thursday, February 20, 2025

If you’ve ever visited the Electricity Office in Abu Halifa for any transaction, you might have been pleasantly surprised to hear a Kuwaiti lady greeting you in fluent Hindi! Meet Ms. Dalal Al Awadi, a Kuwaiti national who has never visited India but speaks Hindi with remarkable ease and enthusiasm.

Ms. Dalal’s fascination with the Hindi language began in her childhood. "I used to watch a lot of Indian movies and was mesmerized by the Sarees, Kangan (bangles), Haar (necklaces), and the vibrant dance sequences," she recalls in an exclusive chat with IndiansinKuwait.com. "Every Friday, I made sure I watched a Hindi movie on Kuwait TV."

During her school days, she would frequently visit Fahaheel Ajial Cinema to watch the latest Bollywood releases, she recalled her memories while humming to the tune of her favourite song, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai....

Her career with Al Mulla group truly sharpened her Hindi-speaking skills. After graduation, instead of opting for a government job, Ms. Dalal joined Al Mulla Group, where most of her colleagues were Indian. "I was working in HR, managing staff files, and many of my colleagues spoke only Hindi," she says with a laugh. "So, I decided to speak to them in Hindi!"

"My Manager Mr Sunil was my pehla guru (first teacher). He corrected my pronunciations and helped me become more fluent." Over time, her interactions with Indian colleagues and staff deepened her love for the language.

For 12 years at Al Mulla Group, she not only communicated in Hindi but also assisted Indian employees, particularly drivers, in police station visits during accidents, etc., using her knowledge of Hindi to translate conversations with police officers etc.

Currently, Ms. Dalal works with Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) at their Abu Halifa branch. "As many Indians visit our branch for MEW-related work, I help them by explaining procedures in Hindi," she says proudly. Her Hindi-speaking skills have made her a favourite among Indian customers, who are often surprised to hear a Kuwaiti speaking their language fluently.

Recently, when the Indian Embassy in Kuwait organized an online Hindi speech contest for Kuwaiti nationals, a colleague encouraged her to participate.

"I never expected to win, but to my surprise, I secured second place!" she shares with excitement. The honour was even more special as she received the award from the Indian Ambassador during the Hindi Divas program at the embassy.

Although she has never visited India, Ms. Dalal dreams of exploring its rich culture and history. "Goa is my goal!" she exclaims, adding that she also wishes to visit the Taj Mahal, Mumbai, and Varanasi. Ms Dalal is more fascinated with Indian history and cultural festivals, particularly Holi and Raksha Bandhan, which she has seen in Bollywood films. "Watching Holi celebrations in movies is magical, and I hope to experience it in real life someday."

When it comes to Bollywood, Ms. Dalal has an impressive list of favourite actors. "Every Kuwaiti loves Amitabh Bachchan! But I also admire Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher, Aishwarya Rai, and Madhuri Dixit."

Among her favourite films, she particularly enjoys historical and period dramas like Devdas, Veer-Zaara, and Baahubali. "I even watched the full television series of Jhansi Ki Rani," she adds.

Like many Kuwaitis, Ms. Dalal has a special fondness for Indian cuisine. Her favorite dishes include Biryani, Butter Chicken, Dal Makhani, and Karak Chai.

As she hums the iconic Bollywood song 'Pardesi Pardesi Jaana Nahin...', Ms. Dalal shares a heartfelt message for Indians in Kuwait. "Don't believe everything on social media. Many times, it portrays only the negative side of things. Kuwaitis love Indians! Indians are our friends, and we cannot imagine our workplaces without our Indian colleagues," Ms Dalal said.

With a hopeful smile, she adds, "I dream of visiting India one day and maybe even seeing my favourite Bollywood stars in real life!"

I had the wonderful opportunity to work with the people of Kuwait, and I am truly grateful for the kindness and warmth they showed me. Their hospitality and generosity made my experience memorable. What touched me the most was their effort to use some Hindi words at times during conversations, which showed their willingness to connect with us in a deeper level. I sincerely appreciate their kindness, professionalism, and welcoming nature. Thank you, Kuwait, for making me feel at home , rather i would like to call it my second home.
Beyond work, I cherish the fond memories of sharing delicious Kuwaiti food. From the aromatic Machboos to the rich flavors of Gahwa and dates, every meal was an experience in itself, filled with warmth and camaraderie.Love Kuwait !!!!
