Every year, on February 25 and 26, the skies of Kuwait light up with dazzling fireworks, vibrant light shows, and a spirit of deep patriotism as the nation celebrates its National Day and Liberation Day. These two monumental days are not just holidays; they are living symbols of Kuwait’s hard-won independence, unyielding resilience, and unbreakable strength as a nation.

Why February 25?

Though Kuwait officially gained its independence on June 19, 1961, February 25 is celebrated as National Day in honour of the visionary leadership of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, whose tireless efforts and wisdom were pivotal in securing the nation’s sovereignty. His leadership guided Kuwait through one of its most challenging periods, and it is on this day that the Kuwaiti people come together to celebrate the values of freedom, unity, and pride that he embodied.

Liberation Day: The main objective of the Liberation Day being celebrated is Kuwait’s independence. Kuwait Liberation Day is a public holiday in Kuwait, observed annually on February 26th to commemorate the country’s independence from the Iraqi invasion.

Fireworks & Light Shows: The iconic Kuwait Towers, along with other landmarks, burst into brilliant colours and dazzling lights, representing the vibrancy and energy of Kuwait's future.

Parades & Folk Performances: The streets are lined with vibrant parades that honour the military strength and cultural heritage of Kuwait. Traditional folk performances, music, and dances tell the story of Kuwait’s deep roots in its history and the courage of its people.

Memorial Services: On this day, the nation takes a moment to pause and honour the heroes of liberation—those who played a crucial role in the struggle for freedom, those who made great sacrifices, and those whose contributions will never be forgotten. These brave souls are forever etched in the heart of the Kuwaiti people.

India’s Historic Contribution: A Legacy of Support and Friendship During the resistance, India maintained a neutral stance but provided invaluable support through Operation Airlift, evacuating over 170,000 Indians. Indian expats in Kuwait also showed immense solidarity, aiding Kuwaiti families and supporting the resistance. The bond between Kuwait and India remains a powerful symbol of unity and friendship.
