My Second Mother Land: Kuwait

Monday, February 10, 2025

I have lived in Kuwait for 14 years. so Technically I’ve lived or spent time in Kuwait more than I have spent in my mother land, India. Maybe that’s the reason we call it our second mother land. This is not only the case for me, any family deciding to settle in other countries for better job opportunities, better life or better education mostly end up calling that land their ‘second mother land’. The word expresses such strong sense of emotion, something that is not so easy to let go or forget, something that is strongly attached to us. The usage of the word conveys a strong relationship we have towards this land. The reason for this bond is, the amount of time we’ve spent here, the families and friendships we have established here and most importantly calling this very land our’ home’ thus making use of the word mother. we can go on and on about the feelings love and emotions we have for this country, but behind all that there are many cultural heritages and historic importance to Kuwait.

History Of Kuwait

The story of Kuwait’s origin and growth during time is a captivating blend of resilience, trade and strategic foresight . it is an epic that stretches across centuries, marked by its transformation from a small fishing village to a vibrant influential nation.

Kuwait’s story begins with a seafaring start in the early 18th century. Early back, the region was home to the Bedouin tribes who lived a nomadic lifestyle across the desert. Around the early 1700’s the tribes, led by the Al-Sabah family, decided to settle by the shores of the Arabian gulf, drawn by the sea and its abundant resources. They hadn’t set out to create a city or tribe. They just wanted settle on the shores of Kuwait bay, where they could trade and fish and also be close to the life- giving waters of the gulf. Kuwait was first a modest settlement – A small port settlement for pearl divers, fishermen and traders travelling from and between Mesopotamia and Persia and also the Indian subcontinent.

The name ‘Kuwait’ itself is derived from the Arabic word ‘kut’ meaning ‘fort’, a testament to the countries early need for protection

The rise of the Al-Sabah dynasty was the real turning point in Kuwait’s history. It came in 1756 when the Al-Sabah family was seeking protection and leadership , established themselves as the ruling family of Kuwait. The Al-Sabah family, through strong leadership and diplomacy created a stable governance system that encouraged trade and prosperity. This marks the beginning of Kuwait’s transformation into a prosperous trading hub. While rest of the Arabian peninsula region remained under the influence of larger empires like the ottoman Turks, Kuwait was able to preserve its autonomy and carve out its place in the world map. The ruling family however, recognized the potential of the gulf began to facilitate pearl diving, fishing and trade

Modern Kuwait
Kuwaitis journey from a small, modest fishing village to a modern global hub is nothing short of remarkable. The country’s development is like a transition reel. Modern Kuwait is a dazzling fusion of tradition and innovation, where the old world of pearls and trading meets the fast -paced, tech-savvy world of today.
