The Medieval Indian-Arabic Relations

Tuesday, February 23, 2021

I was given a generous opportunity for the second time to participate in this annual special issue of “Shukra” with an article. Honestly, I didn’t know what to write, as indeed much has been written about Indian in modern times; plus, I already wrote about my experience with Ayurveda in the year before the last. Therefore, I thought of writing about something from history; something I think few people know, and it will be a good chance to revise history, a glorious one indeed.

My short historical article will be about a famous Islamic scholar who is considered by many historians to be the greatest Islamic scholar ever lived, named Abu-Rayhan Al-Biruni (973-1048); he was a mathematician, geographer, astronomist, & gemologist who was born in Khawarazm, today Uzbekistan. Al-Biruni companioned the Turkish sultan Mahmood Ghaznawi - the ruler of the Afghanistan at that time - to India; there, Al-Biruni was charmed and influenced by the rich Indian culture at that time to the extent that he translated 2 books from Hindu to Arabic; one book is called “Sakaya” that talks about the creation of things, and the other is called “Patanjal”, which deals with what happen after the spirit leaves the body.

Al-Biruni is considered the first Islamic scholar to make “sociological” studies about the Indian culture at the time of the Islamic golden age, where most translations and sociological scholarship in “Bait Al-Hekmah” (House of Wisdom) were focused on the Greek philosophy or Socrates, Plato & Aristotle. One of his famous books is called “Kitab al-Hind, meaning the book of history & geography of India.

The name Al-Biruni is known worldwide for his achievements in Astronomy, but his greatest achievement that made his name echoes through the centuries till now is that he was the first scientist to measure the Earth’s radius, which Al-Biruni calculated as 6336 km; today, after 1000 years from Al-Biruni’s calculation, the Earth radius is confirmed as 6371 km; only 35 km differences in Al-Biruni’s calculations without the highly-sophisticated tools of the modern age! According to Al-Biruni’s notes, he measured the Earth’s radius while was standing on a fortress in the mountain in India, which some historians believe it to be Fort Nandana in Punjab, Pakistan today!

As I said, I wanted to write a short article with a historical facts that shows how the relationships between India & the Arabic World has its roots in the depth of history; and definitely, it will continue to thrive and flourish in the upcoming generations.
