Monday, February 15, 2021

Did you notice that the cultural environment of Kuwait is heavily shaped by expats and how many foreigners or expats inhabit Kuwait? India and Kuwait have a great and a harmonious political relationship along with strong cultural and commercial ties which have existed for decades.

There are numerous records of commercial and cultural interactions dating back several millennia. Over the centuries, historical trade connections were established due to geographical closeness and cultural bonds which gave rise to Social ties that have been improved over time.

Let's look over these relations in further detail.

Trade and economic relations: -
The discovery of artefacts such as pottery and jewelry from Failaka islands points to commercial and cultural interaction between the two countries. Their trade relations date all the way from 1961 when the Indian Rupee was the legal currency in Kuwait. India - Kuwait commerce was based around trade in pearls and horses in exchange for spices and other commodities during those times. Later this trade has been replaced by the trade of petroleum and other value-added goods.

Political relations: -
India was among the earliest countries to recognize Kuwait independence while Kuwait was one of the first countries to help India during the war with China in 1962. High profile visits have occurred between the two nations. India's Vice-Presidents Dr. Zakir Husain in 1965 and Mr. Hamid Ansari in 2009 and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1981 led Indian visits to Kuwait, while Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah- Crown Prince and Prime Minister in 1964, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah- Emir in 1980 and 1983, and Sheikh Al-Sabah-Emir in 1980 and 1983 led Kuwaiti visits to India.

Cultural relations: -
There have been very close ties between the cultures of India and Kuwait, A plethora of Arab foods have conquered the dining tables of the people of India. There have also been strong relations between Indian and Arabian music. Many famous Indian composers base off their work on Arabian classicals for example let's take an interesting piece of music by Guitara, a Kuwaiti band, was released in 2003. There is an Indian cover of it, which was released in 2006. Other than food and music Indians form one of the largest expatriate communities in Kuwait. Kuwait Ministry of Health also employs a lot of Indian medics and paramedics. Indians have been described by the Emir's special envoy as having acquired a special space in Kuwait as ‘a brilliant and the least problematic expatriate community which works for the overall development of Kuwait’.

Besides trade and economy related exchanges, Kuwait and India have also come together in a lot of activities in the field of science and technology such as medical improvements and also in the field of education and culture.

We can surely say that Indian and Kuwait's diplomatic relationship has stood the test of time and have improved greatly over the years. India and Kuwait have a special bridge between them; A bridge of love and trust. In this auspicious occasion of Kuwait's national celebrations, we get a chance to express our love and gratitude to this wonderful country and say from the bottom of our hearts, “Shukran ya Kuwait!”

Happy National day Kuwait!
