When a nation is free to choose its own laws and government, it is called a republic. India became a democratic republic on 26 January 1950. This occasion is celebrated every year on 26 January as the Republic day.

The republic day is a National holiday.

Various celebrations are held all over the country to mark this day. The biggest function is held at New Delhi near the India gate where a spectacular parade is organized.

The President of India unfurls the Indian flag, which is followed by the singing of the national anthem and a 21 gun salute to the Republic. The president takes the salute of the Armed Forces which march by. Other participants in the parade include school children in colourful dress and folk dancers from across the country. The elephant ride of children who win the national award for bravery for that year is one of the most awaited moments.

Beside these, a fly past of fighter planes, helicopters showering flowers, tableaux and pageants showing the culture of different states are some of the other major attractions of the celebrations. At the end of the ceremony flag-coloured balloons are released in the sky. Republic day is India’s greatest national celebration.
In schools also this day is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm. Most of the schools celebrate this occasion a day before as it is a national holiday on Republic Day.

Happy Republic Day !
