An allegiance to my nation, to my land is what I feel for you,
I do not know if I should call this patriotism or my love for you.
You were enslaved for centuries before you were freed,
But Maa, your perseverance taught us that even hard goals can be achieved.
Peace, harmony and courage have always been your virtues,
They were 72 years ago, and they hold true today too.
Maa, you encouraged us to come out of our shells, to come out of fear,
To not hold our own, but others' lives dear.
Your children sacrificed their lives for you,
Such great are the values that you have embedded in them and for this, I admire you.
You taught us to respect every one, be it Gandhi or Kalaam,
And for this I say, Maa Tujhe Salaam.
