Republic Day In India, the Constitution of India came into effect on January 26, 1950 and it is on this day India received its freedom from the British rule and India became a democratic and truly independent country. The date 26 January was chosen as the day to announce India becoming a republic in the year 1930 and on the same day, the Indian National Congress denounced colonial rule and proclaimed Purna Swaraj, “complete freedom from the British”. The Indian Constitution was drafted by Dr BR Ambedkar who is known as the Architect of the Indian Constitution. January 26 is a National holiday and it is celebrated as Republic Day in India every year with a lot of pride and enthusiasm. The year 2022 will mark India’s 73rd Republic Day. Republic Day signifies the right spirit of Independent and individual India. Additionally, it also saw the swearing in of India’s first president Dr. Rajendra Prasad on the same day.
On the eve of the republic day the President of India distributes Padma awards to the civilians of India every year. These are the second highest civilian awards in India after Bharat Ratna. The Padma awards are of 3 categories and are given as Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The main republic day celebration is held in the capital New Delhi and at the Rajpath past the India gate before the president of India. Ceremonious parades take place at the Rajpath, which are performed as a tribute to India; its unity in diversity and rich cultural heritage. This parade also showcases India's Defence Capability. The important symbols of the festival include the exhibition of military equipment, the national flag. President of India hoists the flag at the India gate and the breathtaking view of the parade is a must to watch. Prestigious awards like Kirti Chakra, Ashok Chakra, Paramvir Chakra and Vir Chakra are given out by the President . Schools in India usually have gatherings where they have a parade and celebrate with patriotic zeal and have few activities like dancing, singing, etc. People from every caste and religion celebrate this day.
While it is a very joyous day, we must not forget the struggle that the freedom fighters took part in. Moreover, it is a day to celebrate the spirit of freedom and make sure to help India reach greater heights in the future.
