Beating Retreat Ceremony is conducted every year on 29th January at Vijay Chowk in New Delhi to mark the end of four days of Republic Day celebrations. It is organized by section D of the Ministry of Defense. This ceremony was developed by Major G.A. Roberts on demand by then Prime Minister, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru.
The ceremony begins when the chief guest i.e. President of India arrives. It is followed by playing of Indian National Anthem and National Flag is unfurled subsequently. Next, the three services i.e. Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force march in unison on popular marching tunes.
All the flags are slowly brought down immediately after sunset. The bands march back playing Saare Jahan Se Accha after getting permission from the President.
