Thursday, April 29, 2021

On 25 April 2021, the Department of English of Indian Education School, Kuwait observed World Book Day by paying tribute to the great Bard of Avon, William Shakespeare for his insurmountable contributions in the field of English Language and Literature. The English classes of the day were dedicated to developing a love for reading among the students from grade 5 to 12 through a surfeit of literary activities.

The literary fiesta started off in each class by playing a micro-film titled ‘World English Day’ directed by Lakshmi Nanda Madhusoodhanan of 10G and team. The film began with the famous quote by Derek Walcott “The English language is nobody’s special property. It is the property of the imagination. It is the property of the language itself:” which stated that hesitations or inhibitions in learning the language are groundless.

The maverick students of grade 5 enjoyed the movie festival by watching the short film The Merchant of Venice. They also had a fruitful quiz session based on the movie they watched. The students of grade 6 combined art and graphic designs to create book covers for Shakespeare’s plays. The students of grade 7 made colorful posters on the topic ‘8 Phrases We Owe to William Shakespeare.’ The initial two lines of Shakespeare’s sonnet 30 “When to the sessions of sweet silent thought, I summon up remembrance of things past’’ were given to the students of grade 8 to complete using their own artistic talents. The students of grade 9 to 12 presented dramatic monologues from various plays of Shakespeare. The virtual background for the day was prepared by Punya Prajesh of grade 8F. The students of Grade 10G presented a very informative video on Shakespeare.

With a treasury of colourful and meaningful activities, the World Book Day celebration of 2021 at IES concluded with a call for Bhavanites to spread their wingspans to rise and glide through the expansive garden of English language and literature!
