Seven Continents of Our Planet

We learn about the Seven Continents of our planet in Social Science. This is very fascinating because we get to know about the physiography of earth. The Continents are the huge Landmasses that are separated by the waters of the oceans. The Seven Continents are: Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania, Antarctica by population.

Asia is the largest in size and biggest in population. It has 48 countries. About 4.6 billion people live and 2,300 languages are spoken in the Asian Continent. People live in the urban centres of the Asian continent, in cities like Shanghai and Beijing. Chinese is often spoken by the people living on the Continent. The biggest countries in Asia are India and China. Asia houses some of the richest nations in the world due to its income from oil exploration and the petroleum industry. Countries like Saudi- Arabia, UAE, Kuwait and Bahrain are the richest countries due to their oil reserves.

Africa is a continent which has Fifty-Four Countries. It is the 2nd largest in size and population. About 1.3 billion people live on the Continent. Approximately 1500- 2000 languages are spoken on the continent. Most commonly used language is Swahili. The largest cities there are: Lagos located in Nigeria, Kinshasa in Congo. Africa was colonised by Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Italy etc.
Human fossils like skeleton and skulls have been found. This is why the continent is also referred to as the ‘Cradle of Humankind’.

Europe is the wealthiest and richest continent. Though there are poor regions in the Eastern part of the Continent. It houses the smallest countries like Vatican City and Monaco. There are 44 countries in Europe. The five countries are among the ten smallest countries which are, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Vatican City, Monaco and island country of Malta. 743 million people live in the European continent and more than 200 languages are spoken. English and French are mostly spoken on the continent.

North America is a continent which has at least 23 countries. This is the 3rd Largest Continent in the world. The continent houses 23 countries including Canada, Mexico, Greenland, Bermuda and various other countries.
North America’s population is about 371,107,709. About 150 languages are spoken here. World’s largest island country, Greenland is also located in the North American Continent. Although it is a Denmark Country in Europe. Most commonly spoken languages are English, Spanish and French.

South America is a continent with many natural superlatives. It is the 4th largest continent in the world. The longest mountain range is Andes in South America and the highest waterfalls are Angel falls. Atacama Desert in Chile is the driest place on Earth. The population of the continent is 433,309,545. Latin language is often spoken on the continent.

Oceania is a continent which consists of 14 countries. Australia and New Zealand are the biggest countries on this continent including several other island countries. About 5,000 languages are spoken on the Oceania Continent. The population of people living in Oceania would be 548,914. English is the most spoken language

Antarctica is the 5th largest continent in the world. It is mostly covered with ice. There are research stations for scientists there. Not, many people live there. The increased population would be 1,000 to 5,000. 20 languages are spoken in Antarctica. Russian is the most spoken language.
