We celebrate the 72nd Republic Day On 26 January 2021. It is a National Holiday and is celebrated by Indians as well as the expats globally. It honours the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect i.e. 26 January 1950 replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India and thus, turning the nation into a newly formed republic.

The Republic Day was set for the date 26 January 1930 but it was the year 1950 when India's Constitution came into effect and the country became a republic. India achieved independence from British Raj on 15th August 1947 following the Indian Independence Movement. A draft constitution was prepared by the committee and submitted to the Constituent Assembly on 4 November 1947. As Indians, it is our duty to do the flag hoisting parades and ceremonies too. It is also done by the armed forces and school children. The President of India, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, takes the salute. Twelve contingents of various para-military forces of India and other civil forces also take part in this parade. The unfurling of the national flag is followed by marching from several regiments of the army, navy and air force, along with their bands from the Rashtrapati Bhawan along the Rajpath, until the India gate.

Indian students learn about the relevance of freedom struggle in their curriculum. As a 6th grader, studying in an Indian school, we students learn about the preamble in Social Studies. The Preamble to the constitution of India is a brief introductory statement that sets out guidelines, which guide the people of the nation, and to present the principles of the constitution. Students get an insight into the constitution as well as the role of freedom fighters during the freedom struggle. Freedom Fighters such as Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, Sukhdev Tapar laid their lives for our country India. M.K Gandhi, Father of the Nation fought for the country. With the contributions of the great leaders and freedom fighters, India became a Sovereign, Democratic and Republic state.

On this glorious day, 26 January 2021, we salute the national heroes, freedom fighters and the unsung heroes of our nation. Jai Hind!
