Children’s Day 2020

Oh yes! It’s that time of the year again! The day we students are, well, celebrated! The fourteenth of November it is! A day filled with laughter, fun and celebrations all over the country, as we children enjoy our special day at school. Although many of us do know the reason behind this day, I wish to recapitulate its importance and how it came to be.

The fourteenth of November marks the birth of our first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Children held a very special place in his heart, and this love and affection is one of the reasons of Children’s Day. He was also a strong advocate for the education of each and every little child in the country, for he believed that children are the strength of the country and the base of society. His passion for little ones is what led to him being lovingly referred to as ‘Chacha Nehru’. Initially, Children’s Day in India was celebrated on the twentieth of November, along with all the other countries. But after the death of our dear Chacha, a unanimous decision of celebrating it on his birthday was taken, and ever since it has been so.

Children’s Day is a huge event all over India, as well as in Indian schools abroad, with various competitions organized for the children and entertainment shows and other fun-filled programs held by the teachers, which we students eagerly look forward to. But what about this year, the year that brought a standstill to anything that had to do with social interaction and fun? How were we going to recreate the same environment we had back in school where we laughed and played with glee? More than us students, it was our teachers who were probably worried as to how they could possibly make our day the best.

Well, my teachers were indeed the best about it. A fun virtual show of 2 hours was held on the twelfth of November. I was curious and excited as to what was in store, as I waited patiently before my screen to learn more.

As soon as it began, let me tell you, I was over the moon; words fail to express my ecstatic mood. My heart was overwhelmed at the sight of my teachers pouring all their love for us into their various performances. The entire program, filled with different genres and forms of art, was simply a visual treat, but the most memorable of it all was the virtual trip to the place where I had last stepped nine long months back: my school. As my teachers showed us around, the memories came rushing back: walking (and running) down the hallways, going to the classrooms, playing in the big grounds, presenting our assemblies in the auditorium…it made me miss my teachers and friends all the more. Out of all the songs I’ve listened to, my school anthem was, the very last I expected to bring me close to tears, but oh, was I proved wrong.
My feeling at that moment was really inexplicable. And that wasn’t the end of it. My teachers also held other small games which we thoroughly loved and enjoyed.
To know that all of you teachers took time out of your busy schedules, went through the trouble, that too in this current scenario, to create this wonderful event just for us students, really means a lot, and no number of ‘thank yous’ will ever suffice to convey our gratitude. Nevertheless, thank you so much for everything you did, not just that day, but every single day, all for us. You teachers are indeed our silent superheroes. Thank you for making our special day even more special.
