Diwali celebrated by NRI’s

The arrival of Diwali symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance" It is a time where people get to visit their rishtedars (relatives )and neighbours and also celebrate by exchanging sweets, dishes and doing pujas and prayers. What reminds me of Diwali is a scene from the movie Kabhi Kushi, Kabhi Gham where the celebrations, dances, pujas, sweets etc take place in that huge bungalow.

When we talk about the lives of NRI’s and how they celebrate Diwali, it is really simple and similar to the way how relatives and family friends in India celebrate, but there are a few limitations too. They exchange sweets, have some time video calling their relatives, light Diyas and lamps , Do all the prayers, visit the neighbours and burst crackers and having lots of fun . Well the limitations are that they can’t burst crackers because it creates a lot of noise pollution and air pollution and also disturbs the other tenants in the flat or the building.

The saddest thing is that now in the situation of Covid 19, NRI’s will not be able to visit their relatives abroad and celebrate like a grand ceremony. Even they may not be able to celebrate with their neighbours and exchange sweets and gifts.

But when we talk it in the positive way, they can celebrate by having virtual calls and eat sweets, joke and have fun around by singing songs, playing garba or classical dance etc.
