Diwali – The festival of lights, is the most awaited festival of all the people of India. Diwali symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The Lanterns, Diyas, Rangolis, Firecrackers and the beautiful bright colou red dresses, we all look for it. However, if proper safety measures are not taken during the celebrations it can turn into a catastrophe as it is always better to be safe than sorry . Here are a few safety measures that must be taken to have a safe and memorable Diwali.

Firstly, it is very important to only spend money on branded crackers. Low quality or locally made crackers may contain harmful chemicals and can have an adverse effect on the environment. Similarly, when these toxic chemicals are inhaled it can lead to severe lung or cardiovascular problems. Air pollution caused by the lighting of firecrackers can cause eye irritation, skin rash, and more health problems. It would be wiser if the firecrackers are bought only from a shop that is licensed by the government for the safety and betterment of your family. If anyone starts showing symptoms of difficulty in breathing, wheezing or rashes; immediate medical attention must be given.

Secondly, keep first aid kits, sand, and a vessel with water nearby to save loved ones in case of an occurrence of such an event and to ensure safety. Little children are more prone to accidents related to fire as they might not know how to handle some firecrackers. Therefore it is important to have strict adult supervision. Do not let kids play with any type of firecrackers or with fire, it must only be handled by an adult. Avoid the consumption of sweets or drinks from local shops as they might be adulterated. Homemade sweets are a safer and healthier option. Consumption of any alcoholic drinks must be avoided as the brain may not be able to function properly with caution near a fire and may cause danger to others.

Thirdly, Avoid wearing clothes made out of satin or silk cloths, or any synthetic fibre. Clothes made out of such cloths have a higher probability of catching fire very easily. Therefore it is highly advisable to wear clothes made only out of cotton as they have a lesser chance of catching fire.

Finally, please make sure to burst crackers only in an open space, as it can avoid suffocation, asthma, or any mishap with fire. Always wear a mask during the bursting of crackers if you are sensitive to smoke. Similarly, store the firecrackers in a well ventilated and safely packed box to prevent any fire accidents.

As we are in the present global pandemic of COVID – 19; it is advisable to purchase your firecrackers online. Remember to wear your mask and try to avoid crowds during the bursting of firecrackers. Maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet and keep yourself and others safe. Also, make sure you sanitize your hands frequently.

Keeping these safety measures in mind, light your crackers safely and mindfully, protect your loved ones and cherish beautiful memories of this Diwali. These are few simple ways in ensuring a safe, memorable and a happy Diwali. Thank You
