Why is India Called a Republic?

Every year on 26 of January Indians celebrate Republic Day. On 26 January,1950 the Indian constitution came into effect. India celebrates this occasion with full joy and enthusiasm. The Prime Minister of India also lays a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate, in memory of all members of the armed forces who gave up their life for their motherland. In schools sweets are distributed and many cultural programs are held. We all know India is a republic but do we why is it called so?
A republic is a form of government in which the representatives act on behalf of the government. On 26th January, 1950 India no longer considered anyone as a king. To emphasize on this, the 26th of January is celebrated as Republic day and not Constitution day. The preamble of the constitution describes India as a "Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic".
As proud citizens of India it is important for all of us to know about our country and why we celebrate Republic day. Many of us are not told about such important things in school or at home but it is our duty to research and find out about the glories of our motherland.
