"Future depends on Renewable energy" - Dr Rajendra Pachouri.

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

“Countries like Kuwait where the solar energy is in abundance should make use of these alternative energies to safeguard the environment” opined Dr Rajendra Pachouri, Director General of India's Energy and resource Institute (TERI) and Chairman of the intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), established by World Meteorological Organization and United Nations Environment Program in 1988. Dr Pachouri came to Kuwait to attend the alternative Energy Applications conference organized by the Kuwait Society of Engineers under the patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. Dr Pachouri is the keynote speaker in the conference and spoke on the subject ‘Towards a sustainable energy future’
Dr Rajendra Pachouri commended the efforts of Kuwait to host a seminar on Alternative Energy. “Convert your oil wealth to soil wealth” Said Dr Pachouri. He was speaking to media at a press conference arranged by the Embassy of India. He opined that instead of leasing the land in other countries for food cultivation in order to ensure food security, countries should work towards converting their own soil to make it healthier for cultivation. The real challenge in this region is to improve the soil quality. The Energy and Resources Institute, based in New Delhi is providing viable solutions for cleaning up the oil spill without any adverse effect to the atmosphere. He recalls the demonstration by TERI for the Bioremediation of oil-contaminated desert soil during the invasion of Kuwait.
Dr Pachouri has been internationally recognized as a leading global thinker and a leader of research in the field of climate change and environment. He received the 2007 noble peace prize on behalf of the IPCC jointly with former US Vice president Al Gore. Dr Pachouri has been promoting climate change awareness around the globe. He was conferred with the “Padma Vibhushan”, second highest civilian award, for his services in the field of science and engineering in January 2008 by the President of India.
