The Journey of Gram

The Journey of Gram

I was brought up extremely refined and prince like in my family of siblings. In fact, not just me, but all my dears were exceedingly tendered. We used to have immense fun talking and playing in our tiny mud house of coconut shell. By the way, I am Mr. Green Gram III, speaking of which III represents my rank. I showed up third in my family, so I am III. You might be thinking how I know Mr. Coconut shell. There is a micro story behind it.

On the way from my actual house, which was a huge mud parliament, long long away from Mr. Coconut, I was lodged into a huge vehicle along with my siblings and some other strangers. At that time I was very small, and I had only one eye. I could only see the thing right in front of my eye and that happened to be a group of coconut during the journey. I asked them “Who are you? I have never seen a seed as large as you!!. He replied ‘I am Mr. Coconut’. On the way, we sometimes jumped land landed hard. We didn’t understand what was actually happening but my well knowledgeable Mr. Scholar sibling answered “The world is knowledge, knowledge is me. I’ll tell you everything under the sun.” This way he ended his usual dialogue and said “Friends! Nothing to worry, the straight bumpless roads are providing us with a little entertainment.”

This way we made good friends and you know, coconuts are actually very profound in knowledge. I asked them “From where did you get to know so much?” “Well, I was placed and brought up in great elevation, so my mummy, the coconut tree was skillful enough to observe and interpret everything that happened under her leaves. The three eyes we coconuts have also intern helps us to have a wide view” they said

After a long time of travel, we finally landed at a huge area and my Mr. Scholar sibling informed us that its storehouse where we were to be preserved. In no time we were transferred into huge jars, where I was given absolutely no food or sunlight. Oh! How hungry I was? Days passed, we were trapped in it with no air to breath. My Mr. Scholar kept talking all day to free us from boredom but as time passed, he began eating our ears. How horrifying it was! He would say “The world is knowledge, knowledge is me. I’ll tell you all I know” then he would proceed. Starvation and helplessness were at it peaks. I really missed my dear coconut buddies and above anything, my mother. You know, during extreme droughts, she would feed her kids but refrain from consuming because there would be barley any left. She used to let herself burden by thunder and violent downpour but never surrendered her service of protecting us under her delicate arms. My words for her drown in memories.

Within a few days, we were released from behind the bars. The relief I had is inexpressible. My Mr. Scholar brother continued “The world is knowledge, knowledge is me. I ‘ll tell you everything under the sun.” “We are going to be separated dear siblings.” “What! Why! we exclaimed. “Yes ! we are ,it’s a part of our life journey. We are not meant to be together. We have different purposes in life” my Mr. Scholar brother sadly ended. Within no time a few of my siblings were taken out. With downpour of tears they separated from us. Mr. Scholar said “Uhh..Its written cooking on the container in which they are taken. They will soon wear a new costume in a delicious dish. We will never meet them again”. The state when you’re sure that you will never meet you dear ones again is so disheartening that makes you give up life itself. My Scholar sibling, with a race of tears from his eye said “ The world is knowledge, knowledge is me . I’ll tell you everything under the sun.” Then he wept and wept and said “See, a few are again being taken out. If I am not wrong, they will wear an angels costume before the beauty conscious in the form of beautifying agents.” Pain clutched on to me. As more of them were getting separated, Mr. Scholar sibling kept telling what their role in life was going to be. I was vexed hearing it. I ultimately told him “I don’t want to hear anymore”. The purpose of our life is to only serve others. Don’t we too have families? Mr.Scholar sibling was speechless. The knowledge he had was not enough to answer my concerns.

At length, the left over greens ,me, Mr. Scholar and a few other siblings were taken out from the jar. We were transferred into tiny seed packets for further cultivation as per Mr. Scholar. From there we were transported to a departmental store where I stood up for sale. No one purchased me. I was suffocating in the sealed cover, added to which Mr. Scholar never rested his jaws. Finally, after a many days, someone procured me and it happened to be a child. Even though we were sealed, I was able to hear him. He said “ Yes mummy, I found it!” Within a short time, we reached a new venue and I presumed it to be the child’s house. He opened the seal and took us out. Ah! Finally we breathed. We all felt a sense of freedom. “Bhaumik, did you soak them in water? asked his mummy . “I will soon mummy” he exclaimed. The thought regarding my siblings who departed from us long back haunted me deeply. Where would they be now? But my concern for them had no meaning.

After sometime, I was soaked in water .It felt very nice to sense the cold water after a very long time. But I still wish I saw my siblings. Then came the big revelation. I met a few of my sibling who were meant to serve delicious dishes! What a miracle? … Even they were soaked in water but that was for a different purpose. I was at least able to see them. After a long day, Bhaumik positioned us in soil again with my friend coconut shell.

As mentioned before, I showed up IIIrd but Mr. Scholar was the first. As days passed, I was photographed, not just me but all of us. “Yes!! The microgreens are well grown” exclaimed Bhaumik with a wide beautiful smile on his face. “Microgreens?” I asked. “Microgreens are small vegetables which are harvested just after the cotyledon leaves are developed” explained Mr. Scholar sibling. I understood my purpose of life. I was meant to bring happiness on the face of a child. This filled my heart with the feeling of satisfaction and contempt. My existence was worth it.
