Our Environment, Our Lifeline

The environment, what first comes to our mind when we hear this word? Does it just mean nature, something which our elders are always telling us not to pollute? On closer inspection, it can be so much more. In what way, you ask? Well, the environment is like our home. Would you like for your home to be filled with garbage, dirt, and trash? No, of course not. In the same way, we must be careful with and keep the environment neat and clean. Most of us say that we shouldn’t dirty the environment, but just speaking is not enough. Slowly, all of our surroundings are being flooded with artificial and non- biodegradable wastes. Millions of years later, they will still be present on our planet. They could clutter up the soil, making it impossible for water to seep through. This could lead to the destruction of most plant life on this planet.

In Kuwait, during the summer, we can hardly bear to go outside even for a moment. It feels to us that each summer, the weather gets hotter and hotter. The reason? Well, the only ones who we can blame is ourself. You see, due to the excessive use of petroleum, a lot of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. So, the climate becomes way too hot for us to even step outside.

We humans are the main cause of the bereavement of plants. Every time we kill a plant, it is like we are killing a part of ourself. For every tree we fell, we must plant another 10. On learning about the role which plants play in our life, I decided to take up some initiatives myself. I started by fixing that super leaky tap which is always dripping. I then took a bunch of my friends and went to the local park and planted some of our favorite plants and flowers to brighten up the place a bit. It looked so cheerful and inviting once we were done. In this way, even though we are just kids, we can still do our bit. If we wait for another person to take the initiative, then we will never begin. Take the initiative, and others will follow suit. You must be the example that you hope to see in others. As a famous person once said, every small bit counts. They are like drops in an ocean. With several we can, indeed, create an ocean of change.

Without plants, there would be no Earth like there is today. The millions of trees in our surrounding forms for us a place which has the true comforts of home. Sometimes, it may feel like nature is going against us, but it is the one thing that shall forever remain a true friend to us. We must raise awareness about this issue, as it is something that could end in happiness or disaster. We are the only ones who can make that choice, and it is in our hands alone that the fate of our planet rests. It is us who chooses the path to take, makes the decision between right and wrong. Even if we make a wrong decision, it can be corrected, a fresh chapter started, with new beginnings, new hopes, and new chances. We, alone, can make the choice, and it is our duty to make it a good one.
