Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Bu Hassan, Acting Director of the Traffic Awareness Department at the Ministry of Interior, clarified that there is no specific legal provision criminalizing smoking or eating while driving. However, if such actions lead to inattentiveness or distraction from the road, the driver will be cited under the violation of inattention.
Bu Hassan also advised all drivers to strictly adhere to posted speed limits—both maximum and minimum. "If traffic is flowing smoothly and the driver is traveling below the specified speed limit, a ticket will be issued for failure to adhere to the speed limit, as it results in obstructing traffic," he explained.
In a press statement, Bu Hassan noted that traffic violations have decreased by 75% following the implementation of the new traffic law. Additionally, road fatalities have dropped by 55% compared to the same period last year.
Authorities continue to urge motorists to exercise caution, remain attentive while driving, and verify the legitimacy of any websites or services used, especially when making online payments or accessing official-looking portals.
