The Ministry of Interior denied any new regulations on ladies wearing the niqab or burqa while driving cars. MoI stated that the news circulating on various social media are referring to an old ministerial decision issued in 1984 and not an effective law.
The Ministry of Interior stated that the decision at the time was made for security reasons, as some women driving on public roads wore the burqa or niqab, making it difficult to identify the driver’s facial features. This also placed security personnel in an awkward position when verifying the driver’s identity, especially since some women refused to uncover their faces despite having their photos on their driver’s licenses.
However, today with the presence of female police officers today, verifying the identity of female drivers can now be done easily and without complications.
