Kuwait Hikes Speeding Fines: New Rules Come into Effect

Kuwait has issued a new ministerial resolution amending parts of the Traffic Law to increase penalties for speeding. The updated decision changes Article 211 bis of Ministerial Resolution No. 81/1976, introducing a stricter fine structure based on how much a driver exceeds the speed limit.

Under the new rules:

Exceeding the limit by up to 20 km/h will result in a KD 70 fine.

Exceeding by 21–30 km/h will lead to a KD 80 fine.

Exceeding by 31–40 km/h will cost KD 90.

Exceeding by 41–50 km/h will bring a KD 100 fine.

Exceeding by 51–60 km/h will result in a KD 120 fine.

Exceeding by 61–70 km/h will lead to a KD 130 fine.

Exceeding by more than 70 km/h will carry the highest fine of KD 150.

These updates are part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and reduce accidents by discouraging speeding.

While fines serve as a deterrent, the true consequence lies in the suspension or revocation of one''s driving licence. Accordingly, and in line with practices in most civilised nations, the re-introduction of a penalty points system for traffic infractions would represent a far more effective measure.

Exceeding the speed limit by up to 20 km/h will result in a KD 70 fine??

Great! Now everyone will be looking at the speedometer while driving, causing more rear accidents particularly on main roads.
