Kuwait Born Indian boy breaks Guinness World Record for bottle flipping

Kuwait born Indian boy Joe Sudeep creates a new Guinness world record for the most flips of a plastic bottle in one minute.

After getting into the India Book of Records in July 2021, Joe Sudeep breaks the Guinness World record by beating the current record of 47 flips.

"Initially, I was interested in solving Rubik Cubes. Later my friend Nikhil taught me about bottle flipping, which I felt fascinating," Joe - a 5th Grade student of ICSK-Khaitan - told IndiansinKuwait.com

Inspired by videos on Youtube, Joe started learning and practising bottle flipping techniques for almost a year during the pandemic and then got the idea of breaking the records. The process involves flipping a partially filled water bottle into the air to land on the table upright. This might seem like a very simple concept but definitely not that simple!!! You need to be very focused on the movements — such as the sway, the action, and the force required to land the bottle upright.

He first attempted was for India Book of Records, where he created a new record by flipping the bottle 38 times (on a table) in one minute with eyes blindfolded. This was during July 2021. He used a 330 ml plastic water bottle for the India Book of Records.

Inspired by this, Joe continues his practices for new aspirations. The challenging part was to attempt the Guinness World of Records. There were a few strict requirements imposed by Guinness World Records, which meant that Joe Sudeep had to use a bigger bottle, that is 500 ml bottle. As per the Guinness Record committee, the bottle should be one third filled with water. He needed a lot more practice. "The practice was very challenging. Many times my hands got hurt, but I didn't stop it," Joe said.

In the month of September, he attempted for the Guinness World of Records. The instructions were very clear. The attempt should be recorded with timers and without any editing. It should be in an auditorium with two time keepers and two witness monitoring the time using stopwatches under cameras and laptops. "After getting to know about this, my school gave me all the support required. Even though my principal Shri Gangadhar Shirsath was not in Kuwait, he instructed ICSK Khaitan school to provide the hall and all other supports. Rifle shooting Champion and ICSK Khaitan Social Studies Branch HOD Sharanya Mam was instrumental in arranging all the facilities and providing me with enough support," Joe said.

During the record-breaking event, in the first attempt, he flipped 58 bottles, beating the current record of 47 flips, then in the second and final attempt, Joe flipped 66 bottles in one minute. The results took 3 months, and in December 2021 he was declared a new record holder by the Guinness World Record for maximum bottle flips in one minute.

"Initially, when he was doing this bottle flipping during the lockdown time, we used to get irritated and scold him. The noise when he threw the bottle on the table was very loud," his father, Sudeep Joseph, who works in Kuwait University, said. "However, later, by seeing his keen enthusiasm in this, we started encouraging him," Sudeep said. Joe started practising breathing exercises and Muscle memory which helped him to flip bottles faster and easier. His determination, concentration and regular practice paid off.

Hailing from Kerala, his sister Tessa Sudeep also started practising bottle flipping and entered the India Book of Records for Bottle flips under the Age 6 Category. She flipped the bottle 30 times in one minute. Joe's mother, Mrs Joicy John, works at Kuwait College of Science and Technology (KCST).

"If you practice something without giving up, You will succeed in it," Joe Sudeep, who dreams to become an Astronaut, said.
