Indian Culture : a divine tradition

I could still remember , around one year back I had to attend an auspicious function in Madurai. As usual I was supposed to wear pattu – pavadai and I had no other choice. When I went over there all the girls , I mean almost every girl wore shirts and pants of the newest collection. Aren’t they supposed to wear something traditional ????

But last week , I had gone to a yagna in Kuwait. Once again those words of wearing pattu –pavadai screeched In my ears. I got into the car with my sister and mom, and no matter my dad drove straight to the mentioned place in the venue.

To my surprise the girls over there were beautifully dressed in pattu-pavadai. They were charming, delightful, and beautiful oh! What all can I say? I am happy to tell you that I was one among them.

I am still confused why, people in my hometown think that western culture is more comfortable and better while over here people think preserving Indian culture is great. Everything is turning opposite.

The culture of India refers to the religions, beliefs, costumes’, traditions, languages, ceremonies, arts, values and the way of life in India and its people. But what is changing the costumes they are supposed to wear during religious purposes. I was surprised to read a comment posted in facebook by an Indian ‘ dud, I hate wearing traditional dress.

One small question jumps into my head,’whether a child brought up in our motherland is cultured or a kid raised somewhere else is cultured? I was totally taken aback when my little sister asked me this question. I sat down thinking and I am still thinking …..

Dear Varshini,

There are so many facets to the word culture.

The top most should be

1. Being humane , ( ie. helping other, treat humans with dignity, let others live, not harming other )
2. Arts ( music , dance , painting literature )
3. Last is tradition, yagna , pooja etc.....

If we are not humane then other things are only an eye wash to claim that we are cultured ............only noise.
