The Kuwait Municipality has raised serious concerns about abandoned vehicles, which are increasingly being used as mobile storage units for expired goods and, in some cases, as hideouts for illegal items, including drugs.
In a recent report, the Municipality classified abandoned vehicles into three categories: those simply left by owners, scrap vehicles no longer serviceable, and damaged vehicles requiring repair. The report emphasizes the urgent need for owners of garages in the Shuwaikh and Al-Rai areas to ensure that maintenance activities are conducted within designated spaces. Any abandoned vehicles found in these spaces will be seized.
The Municipality also suggests stricter penalties for individuals who leave vehicles in public spaces, causing unsightly and obstructive conditions.
To alleviate congestion, the Municipality proposed limiting roadside parking to designated areas, provide high-quality bus stations to facilitate the movement of buses, and using vacant land as temporary parking sites. Enforcing parking standards across developments, including spaces for large freight vehicles, is essential for managing traffic flow in industrial areas, it added.
