A Journey So Great….

Shaina Evanka D Cunha, IIK Young Reporter Monday, August 7, 2017

It all began when the British arrived

Hand in arm to take a dive

Into our vast lands of silk and spices

With the hidden agenda of creating a crisis!

Our rulers turned into puppets, forced to comply with the demands

Thousands of citizens died of famish in their own lands

They had to stop this but how could they do it?

Without suffering from the generals and resulting in a fit?

People revoked, soon to be stopped

The needs and cries of the people had been cropped

Against their will they had to grow indigo

A crop for colour to be worn by the foe

The country was robbed of all its wealth

The people slogged till they were poor in health

They revolted and began their movements to freedom

To crown India as their rightful kingdom

Thousands had died while thousands were born

Each generation, the British scorned

The battle for freedom became tougher over time

But the valour of the people ever did shine

Some joined the British force to save their families

Now it was brother against brother, along with British allies

Bhagat Singh fought his way by perishing the intruders

Udham Singh fought bringing out his inner cougar

Rani Laxmi Bai may have just been eighteen

But she gathered 14,000 rebellions with her on the scene

Lal, Bal and Pal began the swadeshi movement

Everyone came together – be it man, woman or student

Sardar Vallabhai Patel fought to retain the lands of the farmers

Sir Ranade revolted to protect women without an armour

Motilal Nehru was arrested by the British

As he carried on the non-cooperation movement despite feeling sickish

A thousand lives laid down all to see the day

When India becomes independent and the British go away

Mahatma Gandhi believed strongly in peace and non-violence

‘Quit India movement’ and the ‘dandi march’ began with his influence

Finally India was redeemed and the people rejoiced

Their opinions could finally be voiced

Even though a partition was laid and people were separated

The 15th of August is a day to be commemorated

A day to remember our freedom fighters and their struggle

To make India what it is today- with any trouble

Invaders now tremble at the sight of our unity

People admire our vast sense of diversity

29 states, 7 union territories and an astounding 1.2 billion people

Our country the cloth and our president the needle

Together we sew a colourful fabric

Of love, culture and traditional magic

Guarded by the Himalayas and surrounded by water

All stand hand in hand- son and daughter

Singing ‘Jana Gana Mana’ with our heads held high

While our very own ‘Tiranga’ soars the sky…
