What comes to your mind when you think of a ‘leader’? Likely someone powerful, confident, and exuberant – someone who captivates, motivates, and essentially communicates.
Hence, the title of this article might seem contradictory at first. How can a leader possibly be ‘silent’? But let me tell you, this isn’t about silence in the literal sense. To me, this holds a deeper meaning.
When I was younger, I fit the typical mold of a leader. A bold and decisive one – someone who couldn’t wait to speak. But as time passed, that version of me evolved. I became more thoughtful, reflective, and yes quieter. Initially, I struggled with this change, believing I had lost something vital. I hesitated to express my opinions fearing judgment and criticism. But the truth is, people will always have something to say, no matter what you do. Judgment and criticism are unavoidable. So, I stopped thinking of it as a flaw and rather a strength— the strength of being a silent leader.
The younger version of me often rushed into decisions without fully considering their impact. She acted hastily without ever pausing to reflect. Now, I take my time to think clearly of the choices I make, contemplating my decisions has made me a better decision-maker than I once was.
Being comparatively quieter than others doesn’t make you invisible. For example, in every Model United Nations (MUN) conference that I have attended, I made sure that my ideas and resolutions made it to the bloc’s final draft resolution (DR). Even without dominating the committee, I've made my presence felt. That is what leadership means to me – contributing meaningfully and making every voice heard, including yours. This approach of mine has resulted in me winning two accolades in the MUNs I've attended, which I see as an indication of meaningful participation.
Leadership isn’t about being the loudest person in the room or measuring your assertiveness, it’s about your thoughtfulness, contribution, and action. It’s about making decisions for the greater good than dominating your team. A leader is someone who collaborates with their team rather than positioning themselves as superior. It is someone who listens and considers multiple viewpoints, thereby making everyone feel seen and heard. Since I strive to do it, I’m proud of being a leader- a silent one!
