Diyas – A Symbol of Light Over Darkness

Diyas – A Symbol of Light Over Darkness

The lighting of diyas is one of the most iconic practices during Diwali. They are small clay lamps filled with oil and a cotton wick, symbolizing knowledge over ignorance and good over evil. According to Hindu mythology, the festival celebrates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after a 14-year exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana. To welcome him, the people of Ayodhya lit thousands of lamps, symbolizing the removal of spiritual darkness.

DIWALI – THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHT

This is one of the most significant festivals in India, celebrated with grandeur and devotion. Each element of celebration, including lights of diyas(oil lamps), creation of rangolis, hanging of lanterns, and the preparation of sweets, carries deep symbolic meaning rooted in spiritual, cultural and social traditions.

RANGOLI – AN ART OF WELCOMING AND AUSPICIOUSNESS

Rangoli is a traditional decorative art made with colored powders, rice, or flowers, usually created at the entrance of homes during Diwali. Beyond its beauty, rangoli is believed to bring good fortune and invite goddess Lakshmi, symbolizing prosperity and auspiciousness. The colorful designs uplift the festive atmosphere, spreading joy and positivity. Creating rangoli is also communal activity, where families come together, blending creativity and devotion.

SWEETS – A TOKEN OF JOY AND SHARING

Sweets or mithai, play a vital role in Diwali celebrations, symbolizing joy, love and sweetness of life. Families prepare and share traditional Indian sweets like ladoos, barfis, and gulab jamun. The act of exchanging sweets strengthens social bonds and fosters goodwill among friends.

Thus, the beauty of Diwali lies not only in the lights that illuminate homes but also in the rich symbolism behind each tradition. Diyas signify enlightenment, rangoli expresses hospitality, and sweets spreading joy. Collectively these elements foster unity and a celebration of life’s blessing.
