Coronavirus- Symptoms, Transmission and Prevention

Today the whole world is fighting against a dangerous virus – Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). It was first reported in the month of November (2019) in Wuhan, China. Then it spread on to other countries. By now 218 countries and territories are affected by this virus. The number of cases reported around the world has now reached the number of 62,076,272. The death toll has reached 1,451,038 (as of November 28). The no. of cases and deaths are increasing day by day. Many countries have implemented lockdowns or curfews. Scientists and researchers all over the world are working on to find an effective vaccine to kill the virus.

The common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough, breathing difficulties, loss of smell and taste. While most people have mild symptoms, some people develop respiratory failures or organ damage. Cases have been reported where people are infected but do not show any of the symptoms. These people tend not to get tested and can spread the disease.

COVID-19 spreads from person to person mainly through coughs, sneezes, talks or breathes. A new infection occurs when the virus containing particles is exhaled by an infected person and gets into the eyes, nose or mouth of another person who is in contact with the infected person

How to stay safe and healthy?

*Wash your hands using soap and water.

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds regularly. Avoid touching your face with unclean hands. Use a sanitizer

(in the absence of soap and water) containing at least 60% alcohol.

*Avoid close contacts. (Social distancing)

Avoid close contacts with people who are sick. Keep a distance of at least 6 feet from others.

*Wear a Mask.

Always wear a mask in public places or when surrounded by people. It prevents you from getting or spreading the disease.

*Cover coughs and sneezes

Always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue while coughing or sneezing. Throw used tissues in trash. Immediately wash or sanitize your hands after coughing or sneezing.

*Clean and disinfect

Clean your surroundings daily. You can also use a disinfectant.

*Consume fruits and vegetables.

Eat food rich in vitamin C, D and Zinc as they will boost your immunity. Recent studies have shown that people with vitamin D deficiencies are at a higher risk of getting infected by the COVID-19 virus.
