What is Ramadan?

Monday, March 20, 2023

Ramadan is a time of Profound reflection, Petition, Mutual Assembling, Administration, and Fasting for Muslims. The Islamic community places a great deal of importance on Ramadan. It is one of the most significant dates on the Islamic calendar, it is observed with great enthusiasm, Worship, and devotion.

When is Ramadan?

The Holy Month of Ramadan in 2023 falls during the months of March and April. The Holy event will begin on March 22 and conclude on April 21.

How is Ramadan Celebrated?

During Ramadan, Muslims donate food, shelter, clothing, and other necessities to the less fortunate. Muslims believe that their acts of kindness are rewarded more generously during Ramadan than at any other time. They treat everyone with affection and refrain from using vulgar language.
Muslims observe a daily fast from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan. ‘Suhoor’, the feast eaten before daybreak, denotes the beginning of the quick, and ‘Iftar’, the dinner eaten after nightfall, denotes its end. The ‘Iftar’ meal typically consists of dates, water, and a variety of regional and culturally distinct cuisines. Muslims are taught patience, modesty, and spirituality through fasting. This is supposed to be a time of spiritual discipline, including more prayer, more charity, generosity, and a deeper study of the Holy Quran. Muslims often eat with their loved ones and friends during Ramadan, and many mosques offer free Iftar dinners to the community. The last ten days of Ramadan are especially significant. During These days, many Muslims observe silence, focusing on prayer and memorizing the Quran.

What is ‘The Festival of the Breaking Of The Fast’?

The Eid holiday also known as the ‘Festival of the Breaking of the Fast’, marks the end of Ramadan and is celebrated with the new moon. During this time, friends and families get together to eat celebratory meals and give gifts to their children. Eid al-Fitr is believed to be a time to express gratitude, forgive, and make amends. Muslims gather for prayer on the first day of the three-day holiday. When it comes to Eid, different nations have different customs. Visits are typically made during the three days of Eid. During this joyful time, Muslims gather with friends and family to worship, give gifts, and eat feasts.
‘The Ramadan Moon’ - Ishan

The crescent moon holds significant religious significance for Muslims. The appearance of the moon signals the beginning and end of Ramadan. The Arabic word "Ramadan Kareem" literally translates to "Generous Ramadan."
A few days prior, I created this artwork for the upcoming Holy Month of Ramadan. The various patterns on the crescent moon depict the Extravagant Beauty of the Ramadan months, and the chandelier figures suspended from the moon depict Ramadan's Arab-originated culture.
