Sunday, March 19, 2023

Ramadan is a very blessed and holy month for all the Muslims. Have u ever wondered what happens or why do the Muslims fast. Well, let us perceive it. It is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar

Observing Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. All the Muslims above the age of 10 are requisite to fast during this month. Lasting for twenty nine or thirty days- it is contingent upon the position of the moon. This month of fasting can be quite taxing when it falls during the summee time in the Middle east countries.

According to the Qur’an, the main reason is for the Muslim believer to attain God consciousness. The purpose of fasting is to train the Muslims in peace, humility and spirituality. During Ramadan the day starts early so that people can eat a pre-fast meal before dawn. This meal called Suhoor, is important as it will keep them going through the day. During daylight hours, fasting Muslims are not permitted to eat food or drink water. Not all Muslims are expected to fast. Pregnant women, children below the age of 10,people who are traveling, elderly people whose health might get adversely affected are exempt.

People can eat and drink once again after the sun has set. The traditional way to break fast is by eating dates and drink a special type of water namely the ‘Zamzam water’.

Eid ul-fitr marks the end of the month of fasting. There are many Eid traditions, mainly centered around family, food, generosity and festivities.
