Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. It is the holy month of Islam which begins and ends with the appearance of the crescent moon. The Muslim calendar year is shorter than the Gregorian calendar year, thus, Ramadan begins 10-12 days earlier each year. This also means that it falls in every season throughout a 33-year cycle. For example, Ramadan last year started April 12th and this year will start around April 2nd. Ramadan for Muslims is a time for them to be a better person both physically and spiritually by avoiding negative acts such as arguing, lying, bad language, and disrespectful behavior. Ramadan is also a great way to become more social especially with family and friends, as Muslims invite each other to break their fast together and meet for prayers at the mosque.

Muslims fast from pre-dawn to sunset, for about 11-16 hours depending on the time of the year. Fasting is not compulsory for everyone. It is though obligated for those who have reached puberty. Exceptions are there too for instance: anyone who is sick, traveling, women who are pregnant or on their menses, older people who are too weak or ill to fast. Anyone who is exempted must make up the fast later, except for those who cannot fast due to age or chronic illness. For children, they are not required to fast until reaching puberty. Though they can also begin to fast for half days or on weekends to train them gradually and to help give an idea about fasting. Many activities are also done in Ramadan. Most common is mosques hosting daily community dinners where Muslims can break their fast together. It is a great service for students and the poor. Another activity that is also done is special Ramadan prayers called Taraweeh. They’re held in mosques after the night prayer where the prayer leader recites the Quran so that by the end of the month, they would finish reciting the entire Quran. This is also done at home where people read a part of the Quran each day to finish it by the end of Ramadan. At the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate one of their major holidays called Eid Al-Fitr or the “Festival of the breaking of the fast”. Mainly children in this holiday receive new clothes and gifts from their parents, relatives, and friends. As well as that not only children but also teenagers or maybe even early adults get money from their elder family members. This amount of money is usually called “Eidia”. Friends and family spend the day socializing and performing various fun activities for their entertainment. In Eid, everyone greets a common greeting which is ‘Eid Mubarak’ which means “blessed holiday!”.
