Ramadan in Kuwait

Thursday, April 8, 2021

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Muslim lunar calendar. Every Muslim around the world fast during this month. During which people eat before sunrise and after sunset - not in between. Not even a sip of water is allowed for those observing the fast. The month of Ramadan teaches Muslims about patience, humility and spirituality. Muslim focus on prayer, charity and kindness during this month. The pious refrain from eating and drinking from dawn until sunset. Fasting is performed by one and all. Muslims are encouraged to recite the entire Quran, and specially the Takbir (Prayer). In the month of Ramadan the Quran was revealed. During the month of Ramadan in Kuwait we all Muslim’s wake up early to eat a pre-dawn meal called Suhoor (Saheri) and they break their fast with a meal referred to as Iftaar. Typically the meal starts with ritual eating of a date, then time for prayer to thank Allah. Charity is very common during Ramadan. People can be seen giving food, clothing and other necessities to the needy. The morning meal enjoyed before sunrise is called suhoor while the evening break of the fast is called iftar. The foods enjoyed for suhoor lean towards the nutritious side - fruits are favored for their hydrating effect, but also breads and fibre-rich dishes to prepare the body for the day ahead.

Iftar is the evening meal where different types of dishes are served - from refreshing beverages and soups to hearty main dishes and tempting desserts.

In the month of Ramadan in Kuwait for Suhoor we eat oats paize (kheer) with lots of dry fruits in it which is very healthy.

The recipe for oats paize:(my moms recepie)

Ingredients-

1) Oats (2 cups)

2) Milk ( half liter milk)

3) Butter (ghee) (2-3 teaspoon)

4) Sugar (half cup)

5) Water ( 1cup )

6) Dry fruits (as per your required)

In a saucepan first add butter (Ghee) and add oats and mix well add a cup of water and take a small boil as it starts boiling add sugar after adding sugar you can add milk and take a boil and at last you can add dry fruits as per your required.

I eat banana fry even called kela fry (caramelized Banana) that is also very healthy.

Ingredients-

1) Banana, sliced

2) Table spoon Ghee

3) Tablespoon sugar

4) A pinch of cardamom powder (option)

First cut banana into slice and put half table spoon ghee after putting half table spoon ghee put 1 table spoon sugar then add a pinch of cardamom as per your choice.By Drinking a glass of water and making niyat we keep our fast.

For iftar we all enjoy eating in one big plate (Thala/thali) where 6 to 7 people eat together. We open our fast with dates and zam-zam water. We first fry the dates in butter (ghee) just for 1minutes and it tastes very yummy. You can try my mother’s recipe’s u will lick your fingers. We eat lots of fruits and drink Pakistani rohafza which give cool feeling or thandai to our stomach. During the month of Ramadan in Kuwait every day we eat different types of cuisines and even share it with our neighbors too.

For iftar we have starters like shame-kabab, chapli-kabab, samosa, gold coins, rashyan-kabab, spring roll, vada, onion-pakora dahi vade, khichra, nargisi-kabab, Hindustani- kabab, pencil-seek kabab, afgani chicken kabab etc.

Among all this my favorite is Hindustani kabab which is very delicious and yummy with hot dogs or mini buns. Kebabs are the most sought after starters, and are a favorite iftar dish during Ramadan. Here is a three-step kebab recipe to prepare delicious chicken kebabs. You can replace the chicken with mutton or beef, keeping in mind the cooking time. Unlike most kebabs, Hindustani kebabs are simple to prepare. Enjoy this simple keema kebab recipe (Recipe made by my mother)

Ingredients:

250 gm mincemeat (chicken or mutton)

1 tbsp ginger garlic paste.

½ kg grated onions

1 tbsp green chili paste

2 to 3 tbsp gram flour

1 tsp cumin powder

1 tsp black pepper powder

2 to 3 slices of soaked bread

1 tbsp garam masala powder

Salt to taste

Oil for frying

Method:

1. Mix all the ingredients except bread in a bowl. Grind the ingredients to make a meat mixture.

2. In a bowl, mix the meat mixture with the soaked bread till everything is completely combined.

3. Divide the mixture into small balls and flatten them between your palms.

4. Shallow fry the kababs on low flame till cooked through and browned on all sides.

I hope this Ramadan brings happiness for each and every one in this world and may this corona virus get vanished.
May ALLAH accept our prayers and fast Ameen!
