Ramadan-The Holy Month of Islam

Monday, April 5, 2021

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic Calendar. This is a blessed month and it provides a platform for the Muslims to purify themselves spiritually as well as physically.

Ramadan is special as it is filled with special deeds such as Fasting, Taraweeh (Night prayers), giving Zakat to needy people and remembrance of the Almighty by zikr. The month ends with a day of celebration called as Eid ul Fitr.

Fasting consists of suhoor and Iftaar. Suhoor is eating at the time of dawn. With suhoor, a person begins his fast and his/her full day is spent without eating or drinking and spending time in good deeds such as prayers, zikr, Recitation of Quraan and charity.

The time of breaking fast is called as Iftaar which begins with sunset. The fasting person breaks his fast by eating dates and then he can eat or drink whatever he wants, until the dawn. Iftaar is a time of sheer joy and happiness.

Ramadan starts by seeing the moon and ends upon seeing the moon usually after 29 or 30 days followed by the day of Eid ul Fitr. Eid ul Fitr is a day of celebration when Muslims give fitr (charity), pray in Eid Gah in gathering, greet each other and enjoy their time with family and friends. People cherish sweet savories and “Sevaiya” a special sweet dish for the occasion. Children receive gift money called "EIDI" from elder people of their family and relatives.

Indeed a blessed month and a blessed day of Eid. RAMADAN MUBARAK
