When you hear the term patriotism what does patriotism mean to you? It might mean a sense of sheer appreciation for our country. Or, perhaps it makes you think of all the rights you enjoy in being an Indian citizen. Irrespective of what patriotism means to each and everyone it provides an opportunity to express the gratitude and sentiments which they bear towards their country.

A person who strongly supports his country with his selfless service and is ready to sacrifice his life for his country is a patriot. But patriotism does not only mean to fight for liberation. Patriotism refers to one's sincere love and respect for their country. This virtue drives people of a nation to selflessly strive to make a better country. A properly established nation is composed of real patriots. To put it another way, patriotism means first holding the interest of the nation and then worrying about oneself. Patriotism can be specifically seen during times of war. Moreover, it helps in making the nation stronger. There are other significances of patriotism as well.

We typically refer to our country as our motherland. It also shows that we must have the same love and respect for our country as our mother. Our country is nothing less of a mother after all; it nurtures us and helps us to rise as a better citizens for tomorrow.

In addition, it also enhances the life quality of the citizens. It does so by bringing people to work for the country’s common interest. When everyone works for the betterment of the country, no conflict of interest will arise. Therefore a better atmosphere prevails.

However, the feeling of patriotism is slowly fading. Today's youth does not feel as strongly for his country as people of earlier generation felt. So, the adults must make an effort to instil patriotism in children. Institutions such as schools and colleges do need to support the same. The country's youth must love and support the nation, and work to make it a heaven on earth.

In short, patriotism does matter greatly in the country's growth. This removes any egoistic and negative motivations that in effect diminish corruption. Similarly, the country can grow more quickly when such social evils do not bring down the pride of the nation. When this glorious moment happens one can celebrate and announce to the world that still patriotism is alive.
