Soldiers of War

Eyes like a vortex of infinite pools
Stared at me through the bloodshed
He asked: calm, collected and cool;
Why I was doing this?
I knew not how to respond
A million thoughts, reasons and feelings
Collided in my mind
And tore at my heart.
I stared at his weary but curious eyes,
Mismatched in gold and blue
They drew me in like nothing else ever could.
I bared my soul to those hues.
I said;
" I am not selfless if that is what you think.
Just wanted to be useful is all.
I do this for myself, for closure.
The story ends that is all.
I do this because I have to.
I do this because I chose to.
I will revel in this life
For as long as it shall be with me."
He froze for a moment
Then he grinned. I grinned back.
We laughed in a fit of utter madness
Then shot up and tore into what lay beyond.
