Our country India was under British rule for nearly 200 years from 1757 to 1947 and after long struggle for freedom, at the midnight of 14th August 1947, British rulers handed the power to Indian freedom fighters. But this freedom was not easy, our countrymen shed their blood, sacrificed their lives, their families, their loved ones and much more to achieve it. Mahatma Gandhi also known as father of the nation, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bahadur Shah Jafar, Ashfaqullah Khan, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Maulana Abul Kalaam Azaad and many more known and unknown freedom fighters played very important role in achieving this independence. Unfortunately, this independence also caused division of our country into India and Pakistan.
Since 1947 we celebrate 15th August as the Independence Day. The Prime Minister of India hoists The National Flag at the Red fort, Delhi, 21 gunshots are fired in the honor of the occasion followed by an army parade and national anthem. This is one of the national holidays and celebrations held in all states, cities and schools.
Even though we live in a country far from India, we also celebrate 15th August in Kuwait. In our school we celebrate this day every year with great enthusiasm and excitement to enjoy the spirit of freedom and to remember the sacrifices of our great heroes. There are many cultural activities and programs like march-past, fancy dress competitions, speeches, debates and quiz competitions organized by all Indian schools and the Indian Embassy on this day.
It is not only just a celebration, but also a great example of unity in diversity in our country. We all gather with a feeling of patriotism at one place to celebrate this special day.
