India will celebrate its 73rd Independence Day on August 15, 2020. It was this day in 1947, when Indian attained freedom from British rule. Our late Prime Minister, Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, hoisted the tricolor flag at Red Fort, Delhi on this same day for the first time in history. After Independence, India became the largest democracy in the world.

Britishers ruled India for almost two centuries. They treated us like slaves until we managed to fight back against them. We attained freedom after struggling hard. It was under the guidance of eminent personalities, like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, to name a few, who helped us to gain independence.

Although its national holiday, educational institutions, offices, societies celebrate this day by organizing various small and big events. In schools, there are many interesting activities like flag hoisting, fancy dress competitions, drawing and painting, organizing plays or skits etc. People of different ethnicities, religion, caste and gender unite in celebration.

In the capital, the celebration of Independence Day takes place at the Red Fort. Our Prime Minister delivers a speech to the nation. Every state and union territory of our country celebrates this day with great enthusiasm. The chief ministers of the states, hoists flag in their respective state capital.

We celebrate Independence Day to relive the moment, enjoy the spirit of freedom, and also to remember the sacrifices and lives we lost during the struggle. Patriotic songs are sung, and sweets are distributed. On 15th August, we can see people carrying and waving Indian flag.

This day teaches us about the power of unity among the Indians.
